Women's Basketball Celebrates Sophomore Day with 73-67 Victory Over Bryant & Stratton
CLEVELAND, NC — Cleveland Community College honored ten sophomores in front of the home crowd Sunday afternoon, then capped the celebration with a 73-67 victory over Bryant & Stratton College (VA).
Before tipoff, the Yetis recognized Isabella Childs, Kiya Shavers, La'TayshiaAndrews, De'Mya Phifer, Jada Whitesides, Kenzie Ross, Ravin Brooks, Sydnie Enste, Kari Lee, and Haley Dalton for their dedication and contributions to the program. The group's impact was felt throughout the afternoon as Cleveland battled to a hard-earned win.
The opening quarter was tightly contested, ending in a 17-17 tie. The Yetis created separation in the second period, erupting for 28 points behind aggressive drives and clutch shooting to take a 45-32 lead into halftime.
Jada Whitesides delivered a standout performance, pouring in 24 points while knocking down 10-of-10 from the free throw line. She added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, controlling the tempo and converting in key moments.
De'Mya Phifer added 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting and went 5-of-7 from the stripe. She also collected five rebounds and three steals, providing a steady scoring presence throughout the game.
Kiya Shavers stretched the floor with three three-pointers, finishing with nine points and five rebounds, while Sydnie Enste dominated the glass. Enste recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds—seven on the offensive end—and chipped in eight points and a block to anchor the paint.
Despite a strong third quarter that pushed the Yetis' lead to 13, Bryant & Stratton mounted a fourth-quarter rally, outscoring Cleveland 22-10 in the final frame. The Yetis stayed composed down the stretch, capitalizing at the free throw line where they shot an impressive 20-of-22 (90.9%) as a team.
Kari Lee contributed six rebounds, five assists, and a block, impacting the game beyond the scoring column. Off the bench, Kenzie Ross provided a spark with six points on 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc and added three rebounds. Isabella Childs chipped in two points and four boards, while Ravin Brooks added defensive energy and a steal in limited minutes.
Cleveland finished with a 39-37 edge on the boards and forced 19 turnovers, turning defensive pressure into scoring opportunities. The Yetis also shared the basketball with 12 assists on the afternoon.
On a day dedicated to honoring the sophomore class, the Yetis delivered a complete team effort—celebrating their veterans the right way with a statement win on their home floor.
