Shelby, NC - The Cleveland Community College Yetis softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Catawba Valley Community College before running into a tough Gaston College squad later in the week.
Yetis 9, CVCC 2
Cleveland opened the March 3 doubleheader with a strong offensive performance, defeating the Redhawks 9-2 behind an 11-hit effort.
The Yetis jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Peyton Whitson and Zaley Packett both scored on a two-run single from Sara Rose Warlick before Charlsey Oglesby added an RBI double to make it 3-0.
Catawba Valley chipped away with runs in the third and fourth innings, including a solo home run from Gionna Mehrtens, but the Yetis answered with a big middle stretch. In the fourth inning, Packett drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Allison Setzer followed with a two-run single to extend the lead. Cleveland added three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from Whitson.
Whitson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Bailey Simpson went 2-for-3 with two runs. Oglesby also recorded two hits and an RBI, and Warlick drove in two runs.
In the circle, Brookelynn Farmer tossed a complete game to earn the win, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out one.
Yetis 3, CVCC 2 (8 innings)
Game two turned into a pitcher's duel that required extra innings before the Yetis secured the sweep with a 3-2 victory.
Cleveland struck first in the third inning when Whitson tripled to right field, driving in Bailey Simpson and Sophia Neal to give the Yetis a 2-0 lead.
The Redhawks rallied in the seventh inning, using a two-run double from Mehrtens to tie the game and force extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Yetis delivered the walk-off moment. Simpson reached and eventually scored when Packett singled to left field, sealing the 3-2 victory.
Simpson led Cleveland at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance and two runs scored, while Packett collected two hits and the game-winning RBI. Whitson added two RBIs with her triple.
Sophia Neal delivered a standout performance in the circle, pitching all eight innings while allowing just two runs (one earned) on 15 hits and recording the win.

The Yetis returned to action on March 7 but were swept in a doubleheader by Gaston College.
In the opener, Gaston built an early lead with five runs in the first two innings and never looked back in an 8-0 victory. Peyton Whitson and Zaley Packett recorded Cleveland's only two hits of the game.
The second game followed a similar pattern as Gaston used a four-run third inning to take control on the way to a 5-0 win. Packett, Whitson, Sara Rose Warlick, and Sophia Neal each recorded a hit for the Yetis.
Despite the losses, Cleveland showed resilience throughout the week with strong performances at the plate from Simpson, Packett, and Whitson and solid outings in the circle from Farmer and Neal.
