First Season Yields Triumphs, Awards, and Scholarships
In their first season, the Yetis men's basketball team made an impressive entrance into Region 10 competition, securing a second-place finish in the conference, and boasting the prestigious Player of the Year in Jashaun Hawkins.
Coach Grayson Pierce stated, "We had a great season for our first year. To finish second and have the Player of the Year in the first year was special. I am excited to start working for next year."
The standout player, Jashaun Hawkins, not only clinched the Player of the Year title but also secured a full scholarship commitment to Catawba College, a testament to his exceptional skills on the court. Throughout the season, Hawkins showcased his prowess, averaging an impressive 20.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, earning him a well-deserved spot on the first-team All-Region.
But Hawkins wasn't the only one excelling. Shawn Wilson, a vital component of the team's success, earned a spot on the second-team All-Region. His contributions played a crucial role in the Yetis' amazing season.
The team's offensive firepower was evident in their scoring average of 85.8 points per game, ranking them 8th out of 28 Region 10 teams. This offensive prowess, coupled with the defensive efforts of players like Elijah Burnett, who finished 10th in the region with an average of 4.7 assists per game, made the Yetis a force to be reckoned with.
The Yetis finished the season with a 16-6 conference record and an overall record of 17-13, securing the second position in the conference standings. This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about the team's resilience and determination, especially considering it was their inaugural year.
Athletic Director Andy Gardner expressed his excitement for the future, stating, "I can't wait to see Coach Pierce's team next year."
The commitment and success of players like Hawkins and Wilson, who both earned full scholarships to Catawba College and Mount Olive University, respectively, serve as a testament to the strong foundation laid in the first year.
As the Yetis conclude their inaugural season with triumphs, awards, and scholarships, the anticipation for what Coach Pierce and his team can achieve in the coming years is palpable. The foundation has been set, and the Yetis are poised for even greater success in the seasons to come.
